What are the best places to go in Slovakia in winter season? Even though Slovakia has many activities during the whole year, winter season has its own special places to visit during this magical season. It is definitely not a boring season, there are a lot of interesting activities you can do here during this chilly season. The best areas to visit in Slovakia are probably mountains in the north of Slovakia like Tatra mountains, Fatra mountains or beautiful Liptov region. But on the other hand, you can also visit some cities and check out some interesting things there too.
The most popular place to go in Slovakia in winter season is mountain skiing in Tatras. The best ski resorts are situated in north of these mountains. The biggest ski resort is Jasna for beginners and advanced skiers which offers 50 km of ski slopes. Other resorts are Strbske pleso or Tatranska Lomnica. Really good places for beginners are Kubinska hola in Orava region or Ski Bachledova near city Ždiar. At this place you can also go around Treetop walk in this Bachledova valley in the middle of huge forest. Many tourists also go skiing to Donovaly which is one of the best ski resorts in Slovakia.
Another good option in winter is dog sledding. Although they weren’t ever used for transporting goods, this is very good sport with long tradition in Slovakia. The best places to dog sled with a lot of snow is in Orava or Liptov region as well as Donovaly ski resort.
If you like walking and hiking, you can choose from winter walking or snowshoeing or even ice climbing. During walking you can see some beautiful landscapes in Tatra or Fatra mountains, but not every hiking trails are opened, and the best choice would be Cold valley in High Tatras or Mala Fatra mountains. Don’t forget the right equipment such as crampon because its very icy and slippery, you can rent them around the mountains. For snowshoeing I recommend Low Tatras, Orava region or again Mala or Velka Fatra. You can also rent you equipment at outdoor shops in mountains. Although ice climbing sounds like very dangerous activity a lot of people like this sport in Slovakia. You can climb up to the iced waterfalls with the right climbing course. The best places are in High Tatras or Slovak Paradise.
Some easier activities are ice skating or sledding. A lot of children love these winter activities. But what would be the best trip for chilly day is taking a cable car in Lomnicky peak and you can get to the second highest peak in Slovakia mountains. The view at the top is just amazing and you can begin at the village Tatranska lomnica in High Tatras.
Another good tip are Christmas markets in Bratislava, the capital city, or in Kosice during December. You can try very good punch and walk around city with the Christmas spirit which is coming closer a closer.
