Article summary
National Park Slovak Paradise (Slovensky raj) in the North East part of the country features lively forests, wide meadows and plateaus, chasms, canyons, gorges, garrulous waterfalls and underground caves (as many as 300). The only one open to the public is the Dobsinska Ice Cave with spectacular smooth blue and clear ice formations. One of the largest ice caves in Europe is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The prevailingly spruce forest, which covers 90% of the park area, is its most valuable asset. The base rock here is limestone and thanks to it, the local flora is remarkably varied. Animals are represented by 200 species, including the bear, lynx, wolf, deer and boar. Several species of rapacious birds nest in the rocks of the park.
Slovak Paradise is a gem amongst Slovak national parks. There are 300 km of marked trails stretching through this enchanting area. Most of them are not very challenging since elevation is not particularly high, but the walk is a real adventure full of attractions such as wooden or metal ladders, bridges, creepers and chains.
